Direct Democracy Bill

Petition Details

In Switzerland major decisions are made using referenda. Every few months the Swiss people vote on a series of issues raised by the people. The UK should introduce Direct Democracy on a similar basis.

A Royal Commission can decide rules for raising an issue and the level of turnout required.

Additional Information

To give an illustration of the range of issues that could be raised,
the following is an example of Swiss referendums this year

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_referendums,_2016

Proposals would only be submitted for referendum once they had achieved a set number of eligible signatories. A minimum turnout requirement, say 50%, would also be imposed, to ensure any proposal achieved a certain level of support before being binding.

Wording / legality of questions determined by Parliament.
