Petition Action

End unlawful detention without trial for political opponents in Bangladesh

Petition Details

Since 2009 the Bangladesh government have been purging members of opposition parties, in particular the Bangladesh National Party (BNP). In August 2016 Hummam Chowdhury and Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem with links to the BNP, were picked arrested and continue to be unlawfully detained without trial.

Additional Information

We call on the UK government to put diplomatic pressure on the Bangladesh government and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to immediately end the detention of political opponents of the Awami League Party and release Mr Chowdhury and Mr Bin Quasem. The UK government should do everything it can to prevent further human rights abuses in Bangladesh and should consider pressing for sanctions with the international community if this practice persists.
