Petition Action

Explain Human Rights legislation

Additional Information

Instruct the Ministry of Justice to produce publicity material to be available in all public buildings explaining that: (1) the UK was an architect of and a founder signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights in 1950, ratified by Parliament in 1951 (2) was a founder member of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in 1959 (3) that this Court is not an EU institution and (4) the Human Rights Act (1998) did not introduce any new legal provisions as such into the UK but in effect merely allowed for appeals by UK citizens under the Convention to be heard by UK Courts, in accordance with UK judicial procedures, instead of by the Strasbourg court as had previously been the case since 1959.
