Give a free vote on EU Referendum
The previous e-petition on a referendum on EU membership garnered over 100,000 votes, however the government feels that they can ignore the public by using the three line whip.
This e-petition seeks to gain over 100,000 votes to force Parliament to have a free and unfettered vote on holding a referendum on EU membership.
Therefore if passed, then Parliament and the Government should once again vote on a EU membership referendum but allow MPs to vote according to their constituents wishes.
This e-petition has been rejected with the following reason given:
E-petitions cannot be used to request action on issues that are outside the responsibility of the government. This includes:
- party political material
- commercial endorsements including the promotion of any product, service or publication
- issues that are dealt with by devolved bodies, eg The Scottish Parliament
- correspondence on personal issues
E-petitions cannot be used for freedom of information requests.
The following explanatory notes have been added:
Whipping is a matter for political parties and not HM Government
