Petition Action

Increase the National Speed Limit on dual carriage ways and motorways.

Petition Details

December 22nd will mark 50 years since the introduction of the 70mph national speed limit (NSL). The improvement of car manufacturing in the last 50 years makes the NSL redundant, as cars today are designed and manufactured to a much higher performance and safety standard.

Additional Information

Statistics from www.gov.uk tables:
In 1965, the number of fatalities across all user groups was 7,952. The 2013 total was 1,713, a reduction of ~78% (RAS40001) however the number of registered cars increased by 23 million (~200%) in the same period (TSGB0901).

In 2013, motorways carried around 20 per cent of traffic, but accounted for just 6 per cent of road deaths (100) and 3 per cent of serious injuries (660) which means they are the safest road type. (RRCGB)
