Lower gym prices at university

Petition Details

Certain universities charge far too much for students to use their gyms. University can present many challenges to young people, including mental health. To promote healthier lifestyles, everyone should have access to the fitness facilities at university, regardless of their financial state.

Additional Information

For example, my university charges £123 annually for a membership that doesn't even let you use the actual gym. If you want to go to the gym for its actual purpose, you face spending £245-£295. With a student budget, these costs are very difficult to pay. The following is a link to the NHS which stresses the importance of exercise in its relation to mental health. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/Pages/Exercise-for-depression.aspx

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the costs of university gyms. You could raise this issue directly with your university.
