Police Bail changes within reason
Theresa May proposes that police bail be restricted to 28 days, with only Superintendent authority for more at a maximum of 3 months. The fact is that this is unrealistic.
Keeping a person on bail for 12 months+ to then release them without charge needs addressing. I propose that Government looks to be more realistic in its proposition. Balance fairness on all, whilst being realistic in its demands on the Police service. Rather than the standard maximum being reduced to 28 days (currently no max), it would surely be reasonable to set it to a standard maximum of 3 months, with a Superintendent-authorised upper limit of 6 months for the more serious offences.
The police service is fighting hard already to meet both organisational and personal expectations during these pressured times of austerity. We are all nervous of the cuts on the horizon.
