Petition Action

raise statutory maternity pay to at least minimum wage

Additional Information

After hearing a report today and experiencing getting into debt because of having a child i believe the statutory maternity pay should be at least minimum wage.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/borrowing/creditcards/9213326/A-third-of-mothers-acquire-debt-on-maternity-leave.html

It should be at least minimum wage for the first two children born with it decreasing back to standard smp for every child born there after.
I feel this would also help with lowering the amount of applicants for housing/housing benefit as they would be able to support or contribute better to the running of the home.
I also believe it would stop people having to use pay day loans/ loan sharks to get by.
