Reduce the cost of Rail Fares

Petition Details

Since 1995 the cost a train fare from London to Manchester has increased from £50 to £154. Fare in the UK are some of the most expensive in Europe yet we see no improvement in service. I commute every day and trains are delayed on a daily basis. The Government needs to help the average commuter

Additional Information

Train fares have increased up and down the country anywhere between 50% and over 200% depending where you are commuting. Customer satisfaction remains low and the fares continue to rise every year. How is this fare on the day to day commuter who needs trains to travel to and from work?

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. The price of train tickets is the responsibility of train operating companies.

While the UK Government and Parliament do not directly set the price of train tickets, the Government can set the rate by which train operating companies can raise ticket prices. You could start a new petition calling on the Government to alter this rate, or for other changes to the way in which train fares are set.
