Review & lift the ban on Iceland's Christmas advert

Petition Details

Icelands Christmas advert has been banned by Clearcast the advert shows the damage that palm oil is doing to the world and that the supermarket's own brand products do not contain palm oil.

Additional Information

Rather than protecting the public from political messages, Clearcast has prevented a crucial message being broadcast to millions of viewers. Icelands Christmas advert is an important message that needs to be shared this is censorship at its worst! Clearcast’s ban on this advert sends out the message that companies can’t shout about the good things they’re doing to be more sustainable.

The message in Icelands advert is important and needs to be heard.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The decision was taken by Clearcast, who are a private organisation. They preclear adverts on behalf of broadcasters before they appear on television.

You can find their statement here:

www.clearcast.co.uk/blog/clearcasts-md-responds-to-coverage-of-their-decision-not-to-clear-the-iceland-ad/

Broadcast adverts are covered by the UK Code of Broadcast Advertising. The rules on political advertising are the responsibility of Ofcom, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition calling for changes to the way advertising is regulated in the UK if that is something you would like to see happen.
