Ukraine-EU Association and Trade Agreements
The Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych, has asked EC President Jose Manuel Barroso for further discussions on the Association and Trade Agreements.
We urge the UK Government to support the EU in continuing to promote closer integration with Ukraine, under the following conditions:
• President Yanukovych accepts full responsibility for the violent attacks by riot police on peaceful protesters
• The Ukrainian authorities take immediate steps to prosecute those who gave the orders and carried out the attacks
• The Ukrainian government takes all necessary steps to fulfil the preconditions of the Association Agreement, including the release of Yuliya Tymoshenko for medical treatment.
In addition the UK Government should use the next meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council to impose sanctions on President Yanukovych and his government for their total disregard for human rights and values as enshrined in Ukraine’s Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
