Petition Action

End UK Government's monopoly of cannabis production

Petition Details

The current government responded to an online petition saying that cannabis has no medicinal value, yet allows the production of 200 tonnes of medicinal cannabis in the UK by GW Pharma. Either allow open access to medicinal cannabis or cease all production of cannabis in the UK.

Additional Information

The medicinal benefits of cannabis must be recognised under UK law (as it now is in a number of countries worldwide) and access to medicinal cannabis must be granted to citizens of the UK. The current government holds a monopoly over this market and withholds access to patients telling them according to a 9 year old report that "cannabis is bad for them" while allowing medicinal cannabis production in the UK for yet another pharmaceutical giants profit.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition in its current form as it does not call for a clear action from the UK Government and Parliament. You could start new a petition calling for all production of medical cannabis to cease in the UK.

If you would like medical use of cannabis to be made legal in the UK, or the laws on cannabis to be relaxed more generally, there are a number of petitions on petition.parliament.uk (petition.parliament.uk/petitions?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=cannabis&state=open&commit=Search) relating to cannabis, which you may wish to sign.
