Petition Action

Negotiate British membership of the European Economic Area in Article 50 talks.

Petition Details

If Article 50 is triggered, the EU Council, Commission and Council agree to Britain's membership of the EEA.

This negotiation mandate is to be finalised by the Council of the EU, then talks conducted by the European Commission & agreed by QMV in the Council (27 States), as per the Lisbon Treaty.

Additional Information

What role will the Commission play in the Article 50 process?

Following notification by the UK of its intention to leave, the European Council, meeting without the UK, would need to agree the guidelines for the negotiation by unanimity. The agreement would be negotiated following the rules on international agreements in Article 218(3) of the Lisbon Treaty.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

In any case, decisions made by the European Commission or European Council would not be something that Parliament or the UK Government have responsibility for.
