Children who are registered for home education to have mandatory welfare checks.
When a child is removed from the school roll and registered for home education, there is a loss of the safeguarding layer of that child that teachers and schools currently provide. Parents have no legal obligation to let education department visit the home and determine if a suitable environment.
Children who are home schooled are at risk of becoming hidden children, with the opportunity to identify risks to their welfare in their home environment severely diminished.
A simple welfare check on a monthly or quarterly basis would be key to preventing these scenarios.
