Petition Details

The UK is full of high sugar snacks and is suffering an Obesity epidemic- why are VAT Free Junk foods are allowed?
High sugar treats must be VAT rated. VAT should be zero rated for healthy snacks for children/adults eg. roasted nuts, raisins, frozen yoghurt, protein bars and diabetic chocolate.

Additional Information

1 in 5 kids are obese by the time they leave primary school! This leads to more issues, e.g. low self-esteem, health/welfare issues.

66% Adults
25% 2-10 year olds
33% 11-15 year olds

The NHS in England spent £6.1 billion on overweight and obesity-related ill-health in 2014 to 15. We spend more each year on the treatment of obesity and diabetes than we do on the police, fire service and judicial system combined.The overall cost of obesity to the wider society is estimated at £27 billion.

The VAT free status on any high sugary foods/ snacks/ treats has to stop.
VAT on healthy foods has to be made VAT free.
