Petition Action

Michael Gove to comment on the misuse of official statistics by Vote Leave.

Petition Details

Serving cabinet minister, Michael Gove was co-convenor of Vote Leave and has explicitly supported the group's claim:
“We send the EU £350 million a week. Let’s fund our NHS instead.”

The UK Statistics Authority has debunked this claim, we demand from Mr Gove an explanation of his position.

Additional Information

In 2016 the UK Statistics Authority debunked the Vote Leave claim that the UK contributes £350 million to the EU each week, and that this full amount could be spent on the NHS. (https://t.co/UdsNlI3mLQ)

Despite this, a recent study by King's College has shown that 42% of Britons who had heard of the claim still believe it. (https://t.co/9yG1vQQ5xA)

Therefore, it is important for our democracy that Michael Gove issue a statement to eliminate public confusion over the matter.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because it's about something the UK Government or Parliament is not responsible for.

This would be a personal decision for Mr Gove, not the UK Government.
