Petition Action

Local Councils and Councillors should NOT be affiliated to any political party.

Petition Details

Councillors should be representatives of their wards and areas, and not bound to any political party. They need to carry out budgets and responsibilities as laid down by a central government, but act in the best interest of the people they represent, their wards, their town/area, their county.

Additional Information

At any council meeting which you are allowed to attend you will witness the major parties either proposing or voting against one another as dictated by their party, regardless of what is right or wrong for the people they represent. All budgets and legal requirements will always be set by central government. The councillors should have no official affiliation with any party. Their priorities should be their ward, their town/area, their county, serving their people not a political party.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The decision on whether to represent a political party or not is one for individual councillors and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition calling for a change in the law to prevent people standing for office as a local councillor from describing themselves as affiliated with a political party in their election literature or on the ballot paper if that is something you would like to see happen.
