Petition Action

Amend our laws on freedom of expression to use the US Constitution definition

Petition Details

"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear"
- George Orwell

Our Human Rights Act permits making laws restricting freedom of expression (Article 10 ECHR)

The US constitution prevents the state making laws restricting freedom of expression

Additional Information

The 1st Amendment of the US Constitution (edited for brevity) states:

"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech ..."

We demand the UK govt amend the Human Rights Act to say:

"Parliament shall make no law abridging freedom of expression. All present and future laws abridging freedom of expression are null and void."

There is not enough text allowed on the petition to properly explain, but the state must never have the power to make laws restricting speech.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the UK Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We understand you want to amend the Human Rights Act but we're not sure how you want to amend other laws relevant to freedom of expression.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
