Make refusal to accept Scottish and Northern Irish Banknotes a criminal offence

Petition Details

The rights and equality of Scottish and Northern Irish citizens is being insidiously eroded through the practice in other parts of the UK of refusing to accept Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes as legal payment. This situation has been the source of hurt and distress for generations.

Additional Information

8th April 2019 the Glasgow Herald reported on Judy Murray's experience of being unable to purchase 2 doughnuts in London because they refused to take her Scottish £10. citing they only accept "British currency"
On 25/7/2019, Pub London refused to accept my Scottish £5 because it was their "company policy" not to accept Scottish banknotes

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the UK Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

Currently, a shop owner can choose what payment they accept. This means it’s legal to turn down any forms of payment. This includes notes issued in Scotland and Ireland, as well as notes issued in England. You can find out more here:

www.bankofengland.co.uk/knowledgebank/what-is-legal-tender

You could start a new petition asking to make it illegal for retailers to refuse to accept any bank notes issued in the United Kingdom, if that's something you'd like to see happen.
