Petition Action

Remove what we pay to get an automatic place in the Eurovision song contest.

Petition Details

Its time we said no to the ESC. The UK is known as one of the "big 5" one of 5 countries that PAY into the contest, this guarantees the UK a place in the finals WITHOUT having to compete for a place. Its time we stopped putting UK money into what is clearly a POLITICALLY motivated contest.

Additional Information

I ask our GOVT to stop paying into the ESC. a contest which is not only politically motivated but also contradicts itself.
Its called Eurovision song contest broadcast over europe via different TV Networks yet countrues such as Australia or Israel which are neither part of mainland Europe or in the EU take part.
I therefore ask our ministers to consider removing our part in its funding.
Let us take part to reach the finals like other countries instead. We dont havd to keep paying into it.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about the UK's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest and funding for the European Broadcasting Union are a matter for the BBC, not the Government or House of Commons.

The BBC is an independent body governed by a Royal Charter. Under the terms of that Charter, the BBC is operationally and editorially independent of government and there is no provision for the Government to intervene in the BBC’s day-to-day operations.

This means the Government is not responsible for decisions relating to the Eurovision Song Contest.
