Change law on lighting on road vehicles to use Lumens units instead of Watts

Petition Details

LED lighting measurement values for vehicle lighting are inappropriate. Lights on vehicles should be changed to use the Lumens unit as this is a measurementof actual light output. Emergency vehicles need sensors that will dim their emergency lights when it is dark.

Additional Information

LED lighting on road vehicles is out of date given huge advances in technology since it was written. LED's can output immensely powerful light whilst using very little power (Watts). Watts is the current measurement in law so there is effectively no limit on the light output from vehicles. Excessive light output is very dangerous as it dazzles drivers and significantly reduces a drivers night vision some time after exposure increasing the likelihood of accidents.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We're not sure whether you want the current limits to replaced at an equivalent lumen or for new requirements, such as for emergency vehicles.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do, such as reviewing the current standards for vehicle lighting.
