Petition Action

Reform the UK political system to make the PM directly elected by the public

Petition Details

Six of the last seven Prime Ministers of the UK were appointed by means other than with support of the UK public via a General Election: Gordon Brown, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak. Democratically, we need to ensure our leader is appointed by the public and no other means.

Additional Information

Amend the UK political system so that the role of Prime Minister is directly elected by the public. In the circumstances that a Prime Minister is removed from their position, via resignation, retirement, removal by their party/Parliament or death, then an immediate Prime Ministerial election should be called.

As the Prime Minister holds office by virtue of having majority support in the House of Commons, we're not sure other than via a General Election how you would like the Prime Minister to be elected by the public and hold office.
