Petition Action

Limit commercial rent rises and increase landlord liability for business rates

Petition Details

To stop landlords inflicting extortionate rents on hard-working shopkeepers and killing our high streets, I would like to see the Government place limits on how much landlords can increase rents at rent reviews.

Additional Information

Also, to encourage landlords to work better with tenants and keep their properties full, I would also like to see landlords liable for 100% of business rates for vacant premises from the day they are vacated. I have been in business for 15 years now and was subjected to a 48% rent increase in 2018. My lease expired in 2022 and in order to renew it’s going to cost me a whooping 68% increase. At the new proposed rent my business is not viable, so I closed my doors for good on May 31st 2023.
