Petition Action

News outlets should include Disclaimers of conflict of interests or biases

Petition Details

Recent conflicts including the war in the Ukraine and the current violence in Isreal have exposed biases in the media causing misinformation. These outlets must be made to reveal any details that conflict with the accurate dissemination of information to the public, particularly in the advent of AI.

Additional Information

Not only does misinformation and biased reporting mislead the public, it can have a dramatic impact upon the political, societal and cultural views of the general public. It can lead to societal unrest, crime and violence and deepen divisions within communities.

The Government has a duty to ensure people are educated upon issues such as media literacy and the importance of accuracy and authenticity of source material and representation to ensure cohesion and peace for the people of the UK

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action, and we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

The Broadcasting Code states that news, in whatever form, must be reported with due accuracy and presented with due impartiality: www.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio-and-on-demand/broadcast-codes/broadcast-code/section-five-due-impartiality-accuracy

Taking action if broadcasters fail to meet the standards set out in the Broadcasting Code is a matter for Ofcom, not the Government or Parliament.

If you are concerned about a news organisation's coverage you can find out how to complain about this here: www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints
