Allow 16 years olds to leave education after they have done THEIR GCSE

Petition Details

Hi I would like for the legal age to leave education to be 16 as I belive that 16 year olds should be able to make decisions on whether they want to stay in education.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

You can already leave school on the last Friday in June if you’ll be 16 by the end of the summer holidays. They then must do one of the following until they're 18:

- stay in full-time education, for example at a college
- start an apprenticeship or traineeship
- spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to remove requirements to be in education, start an apprenticeship or traineeship, or spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training, for people once they reach school leaving age.
