Petition Action

charge working people 14% more council tax for each "under occupied" bedroom

Additional Information

In order to ensure equality throughout society, and to ensure that people earning a wage can buy their own homes, thus easing the demand for social housing, we call upon the government to impose a 14% rise in Council Tax on homes deemed to have too many bedrooms, according to the same criteria being applied to Housing Benefit for Social Housing tenants. For houses with a third bedroom deemed unnecessary under the afore mentioned criteria, the Council Tax for that property should increase by 25%.

The increased revenue from the additional Council Tax should be used to fund level 1, 2, and 3 courses with The Open University for Housing Benefit claimants in order to increase people’s chance of gaining employment as the government claim that they want people to do.
