Give MPs a free vote in all e-petiton debates.

In light of what happened in the debate regarding an EU referendum it is an insult to democracy and the British people that a three line whip was imposed on a public petition. This signatories of this petition would like to see the use of whips banned in any debate that results from any public petiton that reachs at least 100,000 signatures.

This e-petition has been rejected with the following reason given:

E-petitions cannot be used to request action on issues that are outside the responsibility of the government. This includes:

  • party political material
  • commercial endorsements including the promotion of any product, service or publication
  • issues that are dealt with by devolved bodies, eg The Scottish Parliament
  • correspondence on personal issues

E-petitions cannot be used for freedom of information requests.

The following explanatory notes have been added:

Whipping is a matter for poltiical parties and not HM Government.
