Improve Care standards through Professional Development and Staff Training

Additional Information

We the undersigned call on the Department of Health to legislate ensuring that all care staff working with people with learning disabilities and autism in a residential care setting are required to meet a minimum set of qualifications and have relevant experience in the field before being employed to positions caring for clients with these conditions.
1.Care staff & agency must be treated as skilled professionals, employment being subject to suitable experience/qualifications
2.If staff are supporting an individual with challenging needs including Autism they must be taught positive behavioral support techniques and safe physical interventions
3 Individuals with challenging needs must be given equal rights within disability discrimination legislation and the human rights charter; to ensure they do not live in fear of harm, have dignity and access to justice. Physical interventions reviewed proactively rather than, crisis management. Inappropriate use will be treated as assault
