Make engineering a protected trade
At present anyone can legally call themselves an engineer, even if they are a technician or a plumber. The term 'engineer' should be made into a protected trade, similar to doctors and accountants, so that only those who belong to a recognised body of engineers may call themselves engineers.
This e-petition has been rejected with the following reason given:
E-petitions cannot be used to request action on issues that are outside the responsibility of the government. This includes:
- party political material
- commercial endorsements including the promotion of any product, service or publication
- issues that are dealt with by devolved bodies, eg The Scottish Parliament
- correspondence on personal issues
E-petitions cannot be used for freedom of information requests.
The following explanatory notes have been added:
This would be a matter for the existing professional bodies (eg The Institution of Civil Engineers or The Institute of Structural Engineers etc etc)
