Means test MP's, ministers and Lord's for expenses claims

Petition Details

Debate whether Members of Parliament and the House of Lord's should be means tested before claiming expenses, in the same way as welfare benefit claimants. Shouldn't our leaders lead by example and follow the same rules they apply to us? Anyone else claiming far less would have to prove their need.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the rules on MPs' expenses. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for the rules about MPs’ expenses and business costs. You can find out more about IPSA here:

http://parliamentarystandards.org.uk

The House of Lords is responsible for the allowances and expenses paid to members of the House of Lords.
