Petition Action

Promote Openness and Transparency in the EU Referendum Debate

Petition Details

In the interests of transparency and full disclosure, the government should require all organisations that express a view on the EU referendum to declare whether they are receipients of EU funding and to specify how much money they've received from the EU in the preceding three years.

Additional Information

Organisations such as the OECD, the LSE, some large charities, and a number of major unions have declared their support for remaining in the EU, but the public may not be aware that most of these organisations receive funding from the EU, which could be viewed as potentially creating a conflict of interest.
In order to give voters as much information as possible, organisations expressing a view should be required to disclose whether they've received EU funding and how much they've had.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

At the moment, the Government doesn't have the power to require organisations to do this. Parliament would have to change the law on elections to introduce this new requirement.
