Reintroduce National Service
The London / UK riots again illustrate the 'ASBO culture' prevalent among the disenfranchised youth of this country.
Why not kill two birds with one stone: reduce military spending while giving these youths the discipline, sense of self worth and social conscience which is clearly lacking in their lives.
I therefore propose that all 16-18 year olds should have the choice of either: (a) completing a 2 year course in full time higher education; (b) completing a 2 year probationary period in a full time job; or; (c) serving 2 years compulsory national service.
Note: Unemployment benefits would be unavailable to this age group while these mandatory options are in place.
Don't let these youths slip through the net anymore - this proposal would benefit them, the tax payer and the country.
