Petition Action

Stop Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) discrimination against homeowners

Petition Details

From 1 April 2016 the waiting period for help with mortgage interest payments for all new JSA claims by homeowners has been increased form 13 weeks to 39 weeks. This will lead to an increase in repossessions, homelessness and hardship.

Additional Information

Once the payments begin they are limited to two years. This is in contrast to tenants who receive rent payments immediately and indefinitely. Homeowners are being punished for working and paying their way. Full details of these changes are described on www.gov.uk Support for homeowners who become unemployed has been severely cut back. This will lead directly to homeowners becoming private tenants which will lead to and increase in the housing benefit bill.
