Application of the Equality Act 2010 to 'fraternal' guilds and associations eg Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, the Grand Lodges of Freemasons.
Under the Equality Act 2010, an association must not treat an existing or potential member, guest or an associate worse than someone else because of disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy, maternity, breastfeeding, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation (these being ‘protected characteristics’ under the Act).
However, it is clear that some associations such as Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, the Grand Lodges of Freemasons do not comply with this requirement as a matter of basic constitution or policy.
This petition is for a debate on the issues this raises - whether there is a need to clarify guidance on the Equality Act, strengthen the legislation itself or improve enforcement.
