Petition Action

Stop Manufacturers using "BIOS Whitelists" in Laptop and other Computer devices.

Petition Details

Most laptop computers use standard and interchangeable components. For example mini-PCIe wireless cards. This in theory allows owners to upgrade their devices.
However, manufacturers often add software with the sole purpose of preventing such upgrades or forcing them to buy proprietary hardware.

Additional Information

Lenovo, HP and Dell are known to use this on most if not all models of laptop they currently sell with the claim it is required for FCC certification. Other manufacturers such as Acer and Asus do not which means the claim it is for FCC certification is not true as those manufacturers obtain FCC certification.
