To get the BBC to continue to use the UK Met Office as its weather provider

Petition Details

The BBC have announced that by dropping the UK Met Office as its weather provider they are saving TV licence payers money. The BBC will start to use a non UK weather service that is not as accurate as the Met Office and that is not a UK company.

Additional Information

This will involve job losses within the UK and a lack of trust in the BBC and its weather broadcasts, As the national broadcaster it should be using the most accurate weather prediction and one that is UK based.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

This isn’t something that the UK Government or Parliament would be able to do. The BBC is an independent body governed by a Royal Charter. Under the terms of that Charter, the BBC is operationally and editorially independent of government and there is no provision for the government to intervene in the BBC’s day-to-day operations.

There is an open petition calling for the creation of a statutory requirement for BBC weather forecasts to be provided by the UK Met Office:
