Follow the successful law in Portugal and decriminalise the use of all drugs.
In July 2001 Portugal introduced a law which significantly changed the legal response to drug users. The law decriminalised the use, possession & acquisition of all types of illicit substances for personal use. These changes did not legalise drug use in Portugal where dealers are still prosecuted.
Fourteen years on and the world has started to analyse Portugal's attempts to get to grips with their countries drug problem. After an initial increase, drug use of all ages has been on a steady decline. Coupled with this, they have seen a seen a decrease in infection rates of HIV and drug-induced deaths, as well as putting money that was used to stop the supply of drugs into the country to better use.
