The construction of Bel Monte and subsequent dams on The Xingu River would flood an area 12 times the size of Greater London, much of this pristine rainforest. More earth will be moved than was moved to build The Panama Canal. By making their energy network more efficient Brazil could save the equivalent power of 14 of these dams (WWF report). The dam will run at only 11% installed capacity in the dry season.
