Contractually maximum 45 hour working week for Primary School Teachers.
NUT shows that Primary teachers regularly work 60 hours per week and that as a result 40% of new teachers leave within 5 years. Teaching Unions should renegotiate the Teacher Contract around a maximum of 45 hours. They and the DfE should then work out what can be achieved in 45 hours.
NUT research shows that workload continues to be a huge problem. Teachers are working anything up to 60 hours per week.
An NUT/YouGov survey shows that:
- 53% of teachers are thinking of leaving the teaching profession in the next two years.
- The top two reasons given for thinking of leaving the profession were “Volume of workload” (61%) and “Seeking better work/life balance” (57%).
