The British curry industry is in crisis due to shortage of skilled workers.
The British curry industry is suffering due to government's cap on skilled workers coming from outside the EU. We urge the government to review and reverse this policy urgently as this cap is hurting jobs and growth in our industry. Highly skilled workers from overseas are good for the economy.
British Bangladeshi Caterers Association (BBCA) is a members’ organisation which represents the interests of the Bangladeshi restaurant and takeaways in the UK.
• The curry industry employs more than 100,000 people
•There are 12,000 curry restaurants and takeaways in Britain
• The industry is worth £3.6bn to the British economy
• It takes up to three years to train a curry chef
• Previous government-led strategy to train British and migrants from Eastern Europe as curry chefs had not worked.
