Make storing British citizens data insecurely a criminal offense.
There have been too many instances of peoples data being stored without adequate security. Companies that store our data without taking reasonable steps to hash and encrypt this data should be held liable and executives charged with criminal negligence.
In this day there is no excuse for British citizens data to be held without encryption or hashing. There are widely available techniques to secure this data with minimal cost to enable this. Industry standards exist to protect private data and yet they are routinely not adhered to.
The Vtech hack is just the latest in a series of data breaches. It's long past time that the government stepped in to force companies to secure our personal information.
