Petition Action

Abolish the class of British National Overseas for Hong Kong citizens

Petition Details

The British National (Overseas) status was created by the Hong Kong Act 1985 in anticipation of transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 1 July 1997. Nearly 3.4 million Hong Kong citizens registered for British National (Overseas) status before 1997.

Additional Information

The sovereignty over Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997. Nearly 20 years have gone now and the mission of BNO is completed. It will only frequents diplomatic disputes with China as China will consider UK's moral responsibility to Hong Kong as interfering in China's internal affairs. Design of the BNO passports are almost identical to that of the British Citizen passports, except that the latter bear the text European Union on their front cover. Many countries' Immigration Department cannot distinguish these two passports and do not recognize BNO passport holders don't have right of abode in either UK or Europe and have different visa requirements with BC passport holders.
