BBC ~ rail fares ~ UK
Prevent rail companies from increasing fares unless they hit service targets.
Every year rail fares increase despite poor performance, late or cancelled trains and poorly maintained stock. UK fares are also significantly higher than commuters across Europe with some people spending 13% of their income just getting to work.
Train companies should only be allowed to increase prices if they deliver against specific targets for:
- punctuality
- investment in trains and carriages
- customer service
Lines not delivering against target should be forced to cut prices, pay a significant penalty or at the very least freeze fares until improvements are made.
