Pilot online voting for local government elections
The Speakers Digital Democracy Commission made a recommendation that by 2020 online voting should be an option for all voters. If the Commissions recommendation is to be met the government of today and other stakeholders need to define a strategy that ensures a secure adoption of this channel.
Online voting as an additional voting channel to polling stations has in other country examples proven to increase engagement and accessibility to voting particularly in hard to reach voting groups such as military and overseas voters. Recent evidence shows that postal voting is increasing being used to undertake electoral fraud. There exists a misconception that online voting is insecure. Yet Internet voting tackles many of the most significant vulnerabilities existing in postal voting.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The title of your petition calls for a pilot of online voting, however, this has already taken place. You'll find more information about the pilot in the Electoral Commission's report: http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/__data/assets/electoral_commission_pdf_file/0009/13212/Sheffieldstatutoryevaluationreport_27185-20105__E__N__S__W__.pdf
As the pilot has already taken place, it's not clear what action you would like to see. If you would like further pilots, you could start a petition asking for that. Alternatively, you could start a petition calling for online voting in all elections to be introduced by 2020.
