An independent inquiry into the causes of the riots

Additional Information

We demand an independent public inquiry into the causes of rioting and looting.

In August 2011, four nights of widespread violence led to five deaths, the destruction of peoples’ homes and livelihoods, and £100 million worth of damages.

We’ve never seen violence in our communities like this, or felt that our homes are under threat before. Putting these events down to criminality alone is an insufficient explanation.

We all want to make sure this doesn’t happen again, and so we need to understand why this happened.

We want a genuinely independent inquiry into the causes, free from party politics or ideology; an opportunity for local peoples’ voices and perspectives to be heard, so we can build a better future for everyone.

We believe the results of this inquiry should be presented in a format that is accessible to all: young and old; rich and poor alike. We call on the government to show a real commitment to act on the results of the inquiry.
