To consider an immediate moratorium on child imprisonment.
Imprisonment is not appropriate for vulnerable children offenders, often from profoundly challenging and damaged backgrounds and with complex overlapping social and mental health needs.
The recent revelations of the abuse by G4S at Medway STC by BBC Panorama; the number of injuries in secure training centres is 5 times higher than official data by Home Office minister Mike Penning, and the scores of deaths each year of incarcerated children. A rethink is urgently required in the interests of child protect and public protection. Care not prisonfare must be the way forward. Prisons do not work to deter or reduce crime and has been shown to exacerbate crime and social injustice.
