Stop the ban on ethical boycotts by public bodies
Recent remarks by a UK minister and statements to the press by a senior government figure appear to show that boycotting goods or services from unethical producers will soon be illegal for publicly funded institutions. These institutions should have authority over ethical decisions on what they buy.
On 14/02/2016, a government source told The Independent: “All publicly funded institutions will lose the freedom to refuse to buy goods and services from companies involved in the arms trade, fossil fuels, tobacco products or Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.” http://goo.gl/d2Mulu
On 16/02/2016, a UK Minister on a trade mission to Israel said: “We want to boost our trade, encourage even more Israeli investment in the UK and oppose those calling for boycotts.” https://goo.gl/t3DFzU
