Petition Details

Africans have been subjected to comparisons to primates as forms of racial abuse. Naming a gorilla after an African makes people uncomfortable and one would say the zoo is promoting another form of 'monkey-chant racism' without giving it much thought.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We think you are referring to the naming of the new baby gorilla at Bristol Zoo: http://www.bristolzoo.org.uk/latest-zoo-news/newnameforbabygorilla

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. Bristol Zoo and other zoos are responsible for the names they give the animals in their care. You could contact Bristol Zoo to raise your concern: http://www.bristolzoo.org.uk/zoo-information/contact-us
