Legislate to make tax avoidance a criminal offence

Petition Details

The rich and powerful have for too long avoided paying their taxes, with the poorest in society having to pay for this abhorrent greed.

This is currently allowed and encouraged by the government. Our aim for this petition is to make tax avoidance a criminal offence.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We're not sure what change you would like Parliament to make to tax law. Tax avoidance is, by definition, action within the law to reduce a tax bill. Illegal action to avoid paying taxes is tax evasion.

If you would like Parliament to change the law, so that specific methods of tax avoidance are made illegal, you could start a new petition calling for that.
