Name the new NERC research vessel the public choice of 'Boaty McBoatface'
A public poll was taken to name the new NERC research vessel. 'Boaty McBoatface' took the lead when an overwhelming majority chose this name, and it has been suggested it may not be chosen.
Boaty McBoatface gained international media attention due to the quirky nature of its name, bringing an unprecedented spotlight on the contributions the public purse can make towards environmental research. By carrying this name forward, the public who were attracted by the name will be exposed to its research and results, inspiring and raising awareness of critical work that would otherwise be limited to academia.
